About

This is the Tumblr for Cand86, a.k.a. Gwen, just a crazy girl who spends far too much time online.

This is the tumblr for my as-of-lately rarely updated blog, Pop Shot, a simpler place for me to drop off all the random thoughts in my brain and a dumping ground for every one of the amazing things I happen to find whilst meandering on the Internet- pictures, videos, songs, quotes, and websites that would otherwise languish in folders or on my browser's Favorites bar until I felt I could organize and post them "properly". Enjoy the unorganized mess!

Perhaps one of the most salient points of the book is the fact that it very effectively counters a theme etched into the mind of the public: that of the poor religious doctor forced to perform abortions against his or her will. Far too often, when this trope is trotted out in the abortion debate, the pro-choice side accepts its premise (typically arguing for the morality of medically indicated abortions or debunking the claim and explaining conscience clause protections) without ever pointing out that the exact opposite is not only true but much more prevalent: that far from doctors being forced to provide abortions, they are de-facto barred from doing so when they want to.
— Me, in my book review for Lori Freedman’s “Willing & Unable: Doctors’ Constraints In Abortion Care”.  It feels particularly relevant considering the Kansas GOP’s passage of its so-called “Abortion Conscience” bill.

If You Let One Religion Dictate Laws …

… . you’re going to have to let the others do so, too.

I don’t understand people who believe it’s acceptable for religious values to determine what medical services the population at large is able to receive under their insurance.

From this article, quoting Chuck Donovan of The Heritage Foundation:

“”People who are insured don’t want to pay for services they don’t need or to which they have moral objections … Parents want to have a say over what’s covered and what’s not for their children.”

I see.

You don’t want your children- in this case- to be able to access free birth control.  So rather than stopping your own children from doing so (which I’d still posit is a bad idea, but whatevs), you would like to take that option away from everybody, child and adult alike, because of your religious belief.

God forbid the Jehovah Witnesses decide to dip their feet into the legislative-influence pool, because then we might have to contend with those who would try to take away your right to receive a blood transfusion under your insurance.  After all- they do not need that service, and they have moral objections to it, and by your logic, that makes it just fine and dandy for them to raise deductibles or defund coverage of the procedure your non-JW child might need.

And I’m not even touching the last paragraph of that article; I think it should go without saying that the response to “married women should just abstain if they don’t want kids” ought not waste the time of a good argument- it just needs a big “Fuck you.”

Hello, my name is Jesse and I am against homosexuality. What’s wrong with the world? 1. I was sitting with my 3rd wife Eileen watching the MTV and I see Lady Gaga’s video for the offensive gay anthem “Born This Way”. I’d do anything to go back into the 80s when we had real men like Elton John and the guys from Queen singing about the raw, natural, act of heterosexual S-E-X. 2. Years ago, I drove to the theatre. I saw this “Harry Potter and the Secret Chamber Pot” (or something like that) film. This movie is basically boys in dresses, pointing their wands (blatant symbolism, anyone?) at each other. I could sit through Brokeback Mountain (I like cowboys) but I had to walk out of that Harry Potter garbage. 3. Marriage is a sacred life-long bond. Homosexuals clearly cannot handle this responsibility of a life-time. Ellen couldn’t even stay for more than one season of American Idol! 4. The YouTube has been bombarded with Dan Savage’s It Gets Better Project. I have no problem with the project since I’m all for our teens BUT I will NOT have this gay’s face plastered all over the YouTube! My kids are on there! I don’t want them to get AIDS.
Sorry but it’s true.

douchewad. no one cars what you have to say.

Successful troll has apparently been successful xD

That’s got to be torolling, right?
If you actually believe this shit, get educated.

Yeah, seriously. I smell a troll. If this was serious I would be REALLY surprised. All of the things on the list are clearly contradictory. Let’s not get all worked up over this people!

Seriously, peeps?  Troll?  Am I the only person who sees something I want to comment on, but heads over to the OP’s Tumblr and scrolls to see if my assumptions are correct or not?  Sometimes it’s not clear, but most of the time you will get down to the bottom of things rather quickly, like this:

I’d say that the “real men singing about heterosexual S-E-X like Elton John and Queen” would be a big tip-off, but then again, there *are* some truly ridiculous homophobes out there.
On a different note, this picture is also rather befitting, seeing as I listened to this interview today on NPR’s Fresh Air with Dan Savage and his hubby.
